Real Extra Virgin, No Shortcuts: What's

Actually in Your Bottle?

By Wholesome Harvest

September 2026

You've done it too, added a bottle of "extra virgin olive oil" to your grocery cart and checked out without giving it much thought. Between work, running errands, meeting friends and finding a little time to pamper yourself, who has time to investigate what's really inside the bottle?

But here's something worth knowing: not all extra virgin olive oils are created equal.

Some are made from olives grown in different countries, some travel long distances before reaching your kitchen, and the information on the label tells you very little about when or where the olives were harvested.

So, how do you know you're choosing a good one?

The Number You'll See: Acidity

You've probably seen numbers like 0.8%, 0.5% or 0.3% when reading about olive oil. Free acidity is one measure of EVOO quality, under EU standards, an oil must sit at 0.8% or below to qualify as extra virgin.

But lower acidity doesn't automatically mean a better oil. It's one piece of the puzzle — quality also comes down to the olives themselves, how quickly they were processed, and how the oil was extracted. This is part of why cold-pressed EVOO is considered better: no added heat means less oxidation, and lower acidity. Some of our oils test as low as 0.2%, but we also weigh the producer, the harvest and the quality behind the number.

What About Polyphenols?

Polyphenols are natural antioxidant compounds found in olives, and they're part of what gives a good EVOO its peppery, slightly bitter finish; that little kick can be a sign you're tasting the real, natural compounds in fresh olives. EVOO also naturally contains monounsaturated fats and Vitamin E, part of why it's such a staple of the Mediterranean diet.

But olive oil is a fresh agricultural product; its flavour and natural compounds fade with heat, light and time. That's why freshness, careful processing and proper storage matter.

A good EVOO isn't just about the words "extra virgin" on the label - it's about where it came from, how it was made, and how it's been looked after.

We're a little obsessive about this, we visit our producers in Europe every year, at groves and at industry expos, to see for ourselves how the oil is made. If a producer can't answer our questions, we don't carry them.

Finding the Right Oil for You

Good EVOO isn't one-size-fits-all. Some are gentle and versatile, while others are bold, peppery and made for finishing a beautiful dish.

Here's how our range breaks down, so you know where to start.

🫒 Everyday (<$30) Approachable, versatile bottles for daily cooking and dressing from our Abril, Terre Francescane and L'UNIC ranges, plus Frantoio Galantino's infused finishing oils, truffle, garlic, chilli and more — when you want an easy flavour boost.

🫒 Connoisseur For those who've started noticing the difference. Fuller-bodied, more expressive oils from Terre Francescane's single-variety line and Frantoio Galantino's

fruity-intensity range.

🫒 Luxury

For something truly special, discover L'UNIC 500 & 1000 Premium Farga EVOO, made from rare 500 - 1,000-year-old Farga olive trees in Spain Or Terre Francescane Lo Sgocciolato, a limited-production Italian single-estate EVOO.

🎁 Gifting & Décor Hand-painted ceramic jars that are as much a décor piece as they are an oil. Beautiful on a shelf, and even better as a gift.

One quick tip if you're in Singapore: keep your oil away from heat, sunlight and air, and enjoy it while it's fresh rather than letting a beautiful bottle sit in the cupboard for years.

An Invitation, Not Just a Sale

Whether you're cooking for one, hosting friends, or making a meal for your family, good food has a way of making an ordinary day feel a little more special. And sometimes, taking care of yourself starts with the little things - a beautiful meal, good ingredients and taking the time to enjoy them.

So next time you're choosing olive oil, don't just look for the words "Extra Virgin." Ask: Where did the olives come from? When were they harvested? How was the oil made? And who stands behind the bottle?

Those are the questions we ask every producer we work with, because you shouldn't have to be an olive-oil expert to enjoy a genuinely good EVOO. So next time you're looking for a good, reliable bottle, we hope Wholesome Harvest is the first name that comes to mind
